How Obstetric Tens Therapy works

The Obstetric Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulator is a compact device which can be clipped onto your clothing.
It produces a small electrical impulse which travels via adhesive electrodes attached to your lower back.
It works at the spinal cord, interfering with the pain signals as they travel from the uterus to your brain.  It also increases endorphin secretion. (Endorphins are your body's natural pain relievers.)
You experience a tingling sensation at the site of the electrodes, which you can adjust to a level which produces pain relief, and which you can boost during contractions.
Obtens does not interfere with any of the labour monitoring equipment that your birth attendant might wish to use.

Why Obtens?

It works - 90% of women who use it request it for subsequent deliveries.  It is used extensively throughout Europe, America and Australia.
It is absolutely safe - it does not interfere with the natural mechanisms of labour, and does not affect your baby in any way.  The electric impulse does not pass into the uterus.
It is affordable - Obtens units are available for hire on a weekly or monthly basis, usually from 37 weeks.
It allows you to be in control of your birth experience, to be active and to respond to your body in the wonderful labour of producing your baby.

Pricing

Obtens hire, for 4 weeks, from 37 weeks of pregnancy until after the delivery, costs SA Rand 350 in Johannesburg. The price includes VAT, but excludes overnight postage which will be calculated for other destinations.  If you hire a machine on a week by week basis, the cost is R100 per week.

Some medical aid schemes will pay for the Obtens as an alternative to an epidural anesthetic.  You should pre-arrange this with your scheme.  We can provide you with a letter of motivation.
